Rory & Harmony | Only Superstition
Rory wasn’t going anywhere. He had come to accepted that truth by now. In a matter of a month, his life had crumbled and it was easy to see that hard work and a positive attitude had done shit to get him anywhere in life. What did he even have now? He wasn’t going to get that teaching job, the only teaching job he was offered here in New York; he’d lost his best friend and ruined his relationship while doing it; he probably wasn’t going to score anything over the summer; and to top it off, he wasn’t even sure he had himself. Gritting his teeth, Rory dug the heel of his hand into his eye, already so used to the sharp pain that followed that he didn’t even react, and kept his eyes fixed on his phone.
Harmony. He needed her to respond. He needed her to tell him that he wasn’t lost. She was the only thing he had now.
So, when his phone lit up with her reply — the one he had been waiting days for, Rory nearly jumped out of his skin. For a moment he forgot about all the weariness in his limbs, about Blaine and Quinn, about his nightmares, and about everything that wasn’t her. In a whirlwind of movement, he threw Sebastian out of the apartment, cleaned himself up as best as he could, and eventually found himself standing, alone, in the middle of his apartment and staring down his front door. And, in a rush just as sudden as the last , he was afraid.
He needed her to be here, but….The reason he hadn’t contacted her in the first place was because he didn’t want to drop this all on her shoulders. He didn’t want her to see him like this, sleepless bruised eyes with an expression of someone who was staring down Death — and losing. He didn’t want to make her worry, but….He needed her.
He didn’t really know what to do anymore.
But, he would do what he could.
Steeling his resolve, Rory shuffled his way over to the door when Harmony’s quick, rapid knocking finally sounded. She was earlier than he expected, as usual. He forced a smile at the thought. If anything, he could at least try to smile when he saw her. Not matter how hollow it looked.
“Uh, hey,” was his anticlimactic greeting as he opened the door, unconsciously hiding himself behind it with only one bleary blue eye left to peer out at her. “Come in.” He finished, wincing at the roughness of his voice. He opened his mouth to apologize, but her and that look on her face sent him retreating back into his apartment like a frightened animal.
Well, there went all his dignity.
He couldn’t even smile.
For the first time in days, Harmony wasn’t completely tied up at her job and actually had a second to talk to Rory. And he sounded… off. He sounded stressed and not his usual “Hi! I’m Rory the Leprechaun, and how can I help you today?” self. Over the past few years, Rory had only ever had what could be considered a Harmony level of freaking out once or twice. Maybe. Rory was the one who kept his cool when no one else did. And furthermore, he was the one who could help anyone with anything. And Rory had definitely done that for Harmony on more than one occasion. And she wasn’t exactly sure how to deal with Rory being anything less than his happy-go-lucky self.
With that in mind, Harmony practically sprinted up to Rory’s door and impatiently rocked back and forth on her heels as she waited for him to answer. She wasn’t exactly prepared for what she saw, though.
Rory looked absolutely miserable. His eyes were devoid of their usual brightness, and he looked like he hadn’t slept for days. Even during their Skype calls back in college where they were both felt like they were able to die underneath all their schoolwork, he managed to look more cheerful than this. And when he finally spoke and his voice came out rough and scratchy, it sounded like he was speaking for the first time in weeks.
“Hi,” Harmony replied timidly, stepping inside his apartment. “What’s wrong, Rory? You sounded pretty… stressed.”
I do not steal the blankets! That’s what you think.
I don’t!

He turned into an ass, and said I couldn’t have a puppy.
Rory is not an ass! He’d let you have a kitten, I’m sure.

Ummm. He kind of does, Harmony…
Well, Sebastian doesn’t have the ability to cry either.
He does.
Uh huh. Sure. What actually happened?
Oh, please. Rory doesn’t have the ability to make anyone cry.
